We all had our districts, and the very fact that you lived at New Cross meant you were someone better than people who lived in Deptford. I mean, the Deptford people would in their way think themselves someone better than those that came from the other side of the river. Anyone the other side of the river were seen as rough people. Now, I've heard of people who lived at Islington who were quite respectable and lived in nice houses. But at the time, the general impression was in our district, that as there were more working-class people there was likely to be more pub crawlers, dancing on the pavements when the public houses shut, and that sort of thing. In New Cross you were that little bit higher and you wouldn't do that sort of thing in the street. And if you went a little bit further along to Lewisham or Bromley, you were really sociably somebody, you know. You never did vulgar things like sing in the street or anything. Oh no! Good Heavens no! You were made to know your districts in London. The very fact, I don't know if it was something in your speech, or what it was, or whether it was just the district you lived in, but the districts kept themselves socially apart. An aunt of mine that lived at Bromley, her husband happened to sell papers and magazines and printing material, that sort of thing, and she always had a daily maid. We were allowed to visit the day the maid was out â to keep the class, you see. She wouldn't have it known that she knew us people that lived in Deptford or New Cross. Her name was Sarah Ann, but she wouldn't be called Sarah Ann â she was Maud. No one ever called unless you sent the card saying you were going to call and that sort of thing.
